Dhrupad

Dhrupad is derived from Dhruva (northern star) and Pad (composition). Dhrupad, essentially a raga-based music is a powerful and pure aspect of Indian classical music. For centuries, Indian music has been personal ; at home or at the Royal Court, it has been passed on from generation to generation with devotion and discipline. The film argues that both folk and classical idioms as practised today have derived from ancient tribal music, rooted in the celebration of nature a the cycles of life. The film focuses on two contemporary artists, the main custodians of the Dhrupad form, Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar (playing the Rudhra Veena) et Ustad Zia Fariduddin Khan Dagar, the vocalist.
