Aux Guerriers du silence

Cesar Paes
1992 France; Belgium 58 minutes saami; Fulnio

White, frozen tracts of land, thickets and swamps. Saami : A people living in the frozen north of Europe. Fulni-ô : A tribe living in the North-East of Brazil. We asked the Saamis and the Fulni-ô to tell us about nature, and they started talking about their language, about cultures, and identity. In Saami, a single word designates both “nature” and “human being”. When Kertu and Risten, two Saami women, and Marilène-Wadja, an Indian Fulni-ô, talk, a strange kind of complicity seems to connect them. They will probably never meet, but the three of them describe the way a people breathe, draw out the charts of memory reaching far beyond the frozen immensities, beyond trees, countries, climates, paintings, skins, beyond… Their words are founded upon an old, vivid certainty and on the intuition of a whole future that is still to be built.
