On the Levant waterfront, in the old harbour of Amsterdam, moisture seems to bring life to a standstill. In the first half of the century it used to be the meeting place for migrants from Eastern Europe before they left for the New World. Images dating from 1926 show them walking up the gangplanks leading to cargo-ships, their eyes full of hope. Levantkade has become since a few years realm inhabited by marginal people. The homeless from all over Europe have sought refuge in the deserted dock sheds. The police will soon dislodge them and they will be replaced by shipwrecks…
