A compilation film produced by the provisional government of liberated Italy, with the aid of the allies and the participation of resistance organisations. The film chronicles the immediate history of the country: the German occupation, the resistance, the general uprising and the liquidation of the fascist regime. De Santis and Serendrei gathered different sorts of material, shot under fire by amateurs or professionals, or sometimes “reconstructed”.
