“The urban development in Dakar, from the end of the Second World War until the country’s independence in 1960, completely dislocated the city’s old districts. This unbridled development has gradually eaten up all the traditional districts (Medina, Ouakam, Yoff…), which were mainly inhabited by the Lebu. The Lebu tribe, landowners from the Cap Verdi peninsula and founders of Dakar, are the worst hit by this urbanisation. Ngor is now the only village left intact, having succeeded in resisting and countering the town planners’ projects, thanks to its stable social organisation and its impregnable location in the far west of the peninsula. This film is a chronicle which steeps us in the everyday intimate life of the villagers in order to reveal some of the secrets of their relentless resistance.” (Samba Félix Ndiaye)
