La Vérité assiégée

Leslie Asako Gladsjo
1994 Belgium 68 minutes Serbo-Croatian

An inquiry into the independent media in three warring ex-Yugoslavian republics : in Bosnia, as well as in Croatia and in Serbia, some journalists are trying to prevent the press and television being taken over by the governments in power and exploited as vehicles of nationalist ideas. These dissidents write in magazines, such as Vreme in Belgrade or Feral Tribune in Split, or broadcast on the small radio stations, such as B 92 in Belgrade or Radio 99 in Sarajevo; they long for peace, denounce official information, take pleasure in being derisive, and try to inform the public “objectively” : for example, they set up news broadcasting networks via foreign countries, and exchange opportunities to write articles in the magazine sections on which they work. While going beyond the strict context of their work and its tough conditions, the film seeks to show how the grotesque character of war has caused their ways of thinking and their personalities to evolve.
