“Composed almost exclusively of archival footage, the film retraces the memory of the mine throughout the century, in the Nord Pas-de-Calais coal mining region. The past, whether recent or remote, is not told as in history books, but according to a more intimate point of view, conveyed by the narrative of five characters who speak about the details of their daily routine : the engineer, the foreman, the young miner, the trade-unionist and the doctor. The framework and style of the film are based on interviews held in the mining area, and on written material (letters and records).’ (Isabelle Ingold, Vivianne Perelmuter)
