During the summer holidays, the children from the tiny village of Mehriz to the south-east of Teheran, spend the day at Molla Khadijeh’s, a retired schoolteacher who is in charge of one of the region’s last traditional-style schools (Maktab-Chaneh). Under the old lady’s benevolent eye, the children learn their alphabet and the Koran: at the hottest time of day, they are allowed to take a break in a garden full of mouth-watering fig trees.
