Mon premier French cancan

Valeria Sarmiento
1999 France 54 minutes French

Laurence is twenty. She began taking dance lessons when she was four and a half. With her baccalaureate exam behind her, she decides to move to Paris to earn her living as a dancer. She chooses the Moulin Rouge for, as she says, “it is part of the French heritage.” Other young women from all corners of the world have come to take up this «famous» contract. In the company of Laurence, Korrin, Karin, Joanna… we discover the atmosphere, the off-stage goings-on and the traditions of this dream-inspiring place. There is Janet, the choreographer, and Amanda, the dance coach, who together, in three weeks of non-stop work, will drill into the girls the art of the French cancan, the centrepiece of this show ‘Formidable’. Early in May, the première arrives. Decorated in sequins and feathers, the girls step out ready to dazzle Paris.
