Addicted to Solitude

Jon Bang Carlsen
1999 Denmark 60 minutes English

“I travelled to South Africa to find a white family on a desolate farm and film how they were facing the new days of equality after apartheid. But I soon lost my way, both on the endless roads and in my mind. Instead, the film became a story about two different white women who experienced a tragic loss in a white community that wasn’t too fond of the future. Both women gained strength from overcoming their loss to face tomorrow, yet from different viewpoints. Their personal stories reminded me of a possible destiny for the white tribe. By losing their privileges, they have been forced to let all of their fellow beings into their world, and have finally relieved themselves of a loneliness that had haunted them since the first bushman was killed by a European bullet.” (Jon Bang Carlsen)
