Sherman’s March: an Improbable Search for Love

Ross McElwee
1985 United States 155 minutes English

Ross McElwee travels to Georgia and Northern Carolina to make a film on the existing traces left by General Sherman’s bloody march to the sea in 1854. However, his initial intentions are thrown off course by the end of a love affair. He finally decides to juxtapose the General’s itinerary with the more personal subject of his own search for love. On his return, he thus films the Southern landscape of his childhood, his daily life, his encounters with women, including a ‘wild’ girl intent on becoming an actress, an interior decorator, a linguist…
