Maïs im Bundeshuus

Corn in Parliament
Jean-Stéphane Bron
2003 Switzerland 90 minutes French; German

At the Federal Palace, home to the Swiss parliament, a commission is busy preparing a law on genetic engineering (GEN-LEX) behind the closed doors of Room 87. The public is not allowed to attend, as a commission’s debates are secret matters. Yet, nothing prevents a patiently curious film crew from waiting on the threshold’ This political thriller plunges behind the scenes of power into the heart of strategy and the games of influence used by the economic players and those who fear the backlash effects of this revolutionary technology. So, will we have genetically modified food on our plates? In autumn 2002, the GEN-LEX law was put to a plenary session vote. In the waiting hall, it is time for last-minute manoeuvres… and a sudden turn of events.
