Vacances au Sénégal

Holidays in Senegal
François Christophe
2005 France 66 minutes French; Italian

After four years of living illegally in Italy, the filmmaker’s Senegalese friend, Yelli, has finally had his status regularised. He can now travel freely and return to Senegal for his first holidays. The whole family are waiting for him, especially Edmée, whom he wedded from afar. For her and the family, presents must now be carefully chosen and finely calculated to fit his tight budget. Yelli has to show that he is a good son and husband, and that he has not forgotten his roots. The idea of returning provokes as much anxiety as joy. Once in Senegal, the filmmaker is the one to pay the price of the tensions and hitches, and is forced to question his preconceptions. In Europe, Yelli now has another life, one of his own, which is different. He does not yet know how to reconcile what he is with what he ought to be.
