In this second part of the Tomorrow trilogy, Xiaolu Guo focuses on drawing the contours of the modern-day working class. Late at Night is built around the collected voices of East End Londoners, intercut by the voice of a zany and cynical newsreader. This journal of encounters, mostly but not solely with those left on the margin of society, reveals the implacable and on-going gentrification of the British capital. Globalised capitalism not only adversely impacts people’s lives, it also institutionalises this “ordinary madness”.
