Between Fences
Entre les frontières
Avi Mograbi
2016 France; Israel 84 minutes Arabic; Hebrew; Tigrinya

A performance film, Between Fences documents a workshop organised just outside the Holot detention camp by Avi Mograbi and stage director Chen Alon with Eritrean and Sudanese asylum seekers. Their individual accounts tell of the forced migration that led them to cross the border between Egypt and Israel and of life in this desert, in limbo between the dangers of a home country at war and the harassment by the Israeli police. Between the bare walls of a former army building open to the four winds, artists and refugees create a common show along the lines of Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed. The raw form of the work-in-progress invites the spectator to question the utopia of a shareable space on Israeli land, but also the possibility for artistic creation to become a political act.
