In 1969, Thelonious Monk recorded a programme for French television, “Jazz Portrait”. The rushes show us the unused shots and what happened before the call for “action” and after the “cut”… what emerges is a Thelonious Monk up close, grappling with the stereotypes he is trying to escape.
