No movement here, no animated images, no people either-simply inert objects, immobile landscapes, incriminating photos, a rebus of clues: a sleepy village, the countryside at night, a Mediterranean shore, sun-drenched, the benches of a railway station waiting room, a cellar window, miniskirts, gloves and handbags, a brothel setting, a hotel room, deserted offices and a clock… Underlying the images, a monotonous and hesitant voice-the reading of a legal statement by the police officer who took it down: that of a young Bulgarian woman abused, kidnapped, locked up, raped and forced into prostitution, the story of a desperate escape and relentless chase across Europe. At the centre of these images, these scattered traces, is a timer, strange and persistent. (Yann Lardeau)
