With 100,000 francs given by his father-in-law, Jean Vigo bought a second-hand Debrie camera, and asked Boris Kaufman, Diga Vertov’s brother to shoot his first film. He was 24 at the time, and would die 5 years later. Before the first screening in the VIeux-Colombier theatre, he gave a lecture entitled “Vers un cinéma social” (towards social filmmaking).
