A minimalist writing for this film, which revisits the Rwandan genocide fifteen years on from a singular perspective, that of the Righteous or the Benefactors (Abagizeneza). There were a few Hutu who opposed the blood bath and risked their lives to save Tutsi. Five of them talk about their choices, their fears. They speak of simple, obvious acts, which in fact were anything but that: the film begins with the story of a one-legged herdsman, who had his knee crushed for hiding a fugitive. The film creates a tenuous but persistent link between each of these good Samaritans. This bridge is vital, as it wards off a wound that has penetrated the language itself. In former times, adults were indiscriminately “uncles” and “aunts” for the younger generations, be they Tutsi or Hutu. (Yann Lardeau)
