A civil engineer and ethnologist, Jean Rouch was 29 when he spent nine months shooting his first film, as he went down the River Niger on a pirogue. Au Pays des Mages Noirs was the first French film shot on 16 mm and blown-up to 35 mm for a theatrical release.
