Das Haus mit dem Bananenbaum

Leningrad, July 1990. Boris and Natasha, two 34 year old engineers, decide to emigrate to Israel. They can no longer envision a future for their children in Leningrad. And “there is no food and no ideal.” A thousand Soviet Jews leave the USSR every day. Boris and Natasha decide to travel by car. With the savings they have put aside for twenty years, they buy a brand new Moskvic they intend to sell with profit either in Yugoslavia or in Greece. They launch into a 5,000 km journey through Eastern Europe. They hope the old car that pulls their caravan will not fall into pieces before they arrive in Haifa. As a matter of course, things sometimes go amiss. each stage of their journey is a series of small pleasures, storms in tea cups, and disappointments.
