In Germany of the 1930s, Hans and Lene get married. War breaks out. While her husband is away on the front, Lene gives birth to a baby girl, Anna. Both of them find themselves facing fear, violence and deprivation. On Hans’ return, the couple breaks up, Germany is reduced to ruins.
