Elegie über einen Abzug

One of the largest military exercises in history takes place in Germany, almost unnoticed – the drawdown of hundreds of thousands of American and Russian soldiers. The drawdown is accompanied by a radical change of political structures in Europe. The film reflects the irritations and uncertainties under the new political circumstances. The American drawdown in Baden-Wuerttemberg is shown in contrast to the Russian drawdown in Eastern Germany – without winners, because the Cold War knew only losers on all sides. The departure of the occupation forces marks the end of an era.
