A genuinely subversive film, Fatucha Superstar is a queer musical comedy inspired by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar. Making the American hippy imaginary his own, gay-style, Ferreira demolishes one of the ideological mainstays of the Estado Novo: the myth of the apparition of Our Lady of Fátima. Christian symbolism is mocked and turned on its head: in a comic and kitsch blasphemous, the Madonna becomes Fatucha the transvestite.
