Accompanied by photographer and filmmaker Fouad Elkoury, Akram Zaatari visited the ateliers of the famous illustrators in Damascus who paint the large banners hanging on the façades and sides of buildings, reproducing portraits of Hafez el-Assad and his sons. Under the guise of portraits commissioned by Egyptian movie stars, they attempt to explore the craftsmen’s masterful visual manufacture of the personality cult under dictatorship.
