In May 1988 Elizabeth died after a long battle with cancer of the liver. Her death was not unique, every year many people die from cancer. What was special about this particular death, however, was that she was one of a growing number of European New Zealanders who chose to die at home and she had access to do this with dignity. Not only did she decide against dying in a hospital, in consultation with friends and family she decided what should happen to her after death.
