Catherine Azad, whose grandmother left Ukraine in 1932, returns to her roots, accompanied by her ten year old daughter and her director-cameraman husband, Frédéric Gonseth. In order to get a real feel for the place, they travel the Ukranian countryside on foot, their material transported by a donkey. Exchanging things with the peasants, they develop friendships. The encounters throws up memories of terrible years gone by, of famine and repression. The film also evokes the problems of change, the disintegration of economic structures, the worries of the present and the year of the future.
