Three Quebeckers, including the poet Michel Garneau, along with three inhabitants of St-Malo and the film crew, set off from St-Malo, the home town of Jacques Cartier, for Québec, on a yacht specially chartered for the occasion. They all tell stories, recreating an adventure which is still alive in the film-maker’s mind, where past and present are indissolubly linked. In the second part, the journey up the Saint-Laurent River becomes a pilgrimage to previous sources of inspiration, to people and places glimpsed in so many earlier works.
