“Here then is an adventure film: the adventure of an impossible biography, at once prisoner of cinema dictionaries and overflowing with the profusion of a man’s live words, a film-maker, who questions again and again his own approach. He struggles against himself and against others, hesitates an instant, doubts and asserts while confronted with his own self through the pictures of men and places filmed yesterday or through those he is preparing to film today. Nothing is invented a priori in this film’s project. The questions are really from Pierre Perrault (film-maker) in person but, beyond them, lies the fate of any creator faced with his work.”
