A ruthless battle in the arena of Marseilles public life: the father, Gaston Deferre, has died and the sons are tearing each other apart over his succession, unless an outsider… A journalist who knows the city and holds it dear follows this war of succession. Who will triumph? The enigmatic Robert Vigouroux, expelled from the Socialist Party for playing an over-personal game, Michel Pezet, leader of the local Socialist Party, but who dared to confront Gaston Deferre just before he died? Or Jean-Claude Gaudin, the populist right- wing leader, who had nearly defeated Deferre in 1983?
