Mashad Ardahal is a village near Kashan on the edge of the Iranian salt desert. On the birthday of the martyr Sultan Ali, Immam Bagher’s son, the ritual cleaning of the carpets (ghali) is performed within the Mashadghali, a sacred place. The red colour, predominant in these carpets, symbolises the blood shed by Sultan Ali.
