“At the beginning everything seemed relatively simple. I was looking for a boy of African origin, from Mozambique, Cap Verde, Angola or Sao Tome, to play the part of Alberto in the film I’d just finished writing As the boys weren’t actors, I asked them to tell me a story of their own choosing. What they actually gave me was a piece of their own lives, and this they did with such generosity and authenticity that I felt that I was the one who’d been put on the spot.
