Joseph Conrad wrote that at the outset of every piece of art there is a will to break a part of time out of the unmerciful flow of life and make it available to others. The time I spent with Andrej Tarkovskij while working on The Sacrifice will vanish as everything else disappears in our memories. I do not want that to happen. Maybe I am afraid of such a loss in the labyrinth of remembrance or maybe it is my affection for him that drives me, I don’t know. Andrej opened certain doors for me and let me in. The time I spent in the world of his ideas, thoughts and feelings enriched me. I was not the only one. Many of us who worked on the film felt the same way. I felt obliged to bring him closer to you, to share with you the time that passed. (Michal Leszczylowski – Stockholm, April 27, 1988).
