JORIS IVENS AWARD

In a quarry in Tanzania, women break stones with their hands for a pittance, while men use machines to do the same job. Many of these women are refugees from Mozambique and are the sole support for their children. Monotonous days and the obsessive hammer blows, punctuated sometimes by a song or a dance, if not an injury or accident. “These hands can feed me, clothe me, wash me and bury me”.
