Silence reigns in this film, which forcefully conveys the atmosphere surrounding the death of the student Jan Palach, who burnt himself to death to protest against the Soviet occupation. The silence in the hospital room and that of the crowd at the funeral procession are broken only by a song composed in homage to the young man.
