The Sveaborg fortress, on a group of islands in front of Helsinki, has during the two hundred years of its existence been the symbol of power of changing rulers. Built by the Swedes, it was taken over by the Russians without battle in 1809 ; in 1905 a rebellion of Russian soldiers broke out also here and was bloodily conquered ; in 1918, after the Civil War, it became a prison camp for the conquered Reds. The signs of the past come into life in the film.
