Seasons of Blood and Hope

“Each time war destroys everything, man sets about rebuilding even if this seems impossible, even if he is mad with pain. Spring-Summer 1999: endless hours of TV-news from Kosovo. Hundreds of thousands of anonymous faces. The bombing of refugee convoys. Live horror. But it is impossible to encompass one million victims. When I began shooting in November 1998, I thought my film would be a description of starting again after the Serb offensive in the summer of 1998. But with the NATO bombings, things took a different turn. The shooting finished in November 1999, after the most tragic year in the history of Kosovo. In the film, I follow a number of Albanians and Serbs from Kosovo for one year. All the characters first lived in Kosovo, but then their story travels through Serbia and Montenegro. My purpose is not show acts of violence, but rather the willpower of the victims, how they overcome the shock and then create a way of living.” (Lars Johannson)
