Cargo, récit du pays des ombres

Cargo, Tales from the Land of Shadows
Charlie Rojo
2004 France 90 minutes French; Rumanian

For two months, I accompanied a Franco-Romanian crew from Le Havre to Shanghai and shared the life of twenty men left to themselves aboard a Titanicsized container carrier. With this film (between documentary, fiction and experimental film), I had set myself the challenge of giving priority to sensations and the poetic side of this long-haul voyage, rather than explaining a seaman’s job. Video, black and white super-8, live sequences, contemplative scenes, music and heartbeats are intermingled in an attempt to convey life at sea and a confined world. An invisible character, the ship’s radio operator (a merchant navy job that has now disappeared), monologues his anxieties, his demons and obsessions during this inner journey. (Charlie Rojo) .
