Some years back, a foreigner called Andersson arrived direct from Sweden to settle on the banks of Lake Balkash, near the village of Karoy. Living in an isolated hunting cabin, he survived by fishing, gathering herbs and weaving rush mats. The nearby villagers little appreciated his marginal lifestyle and began to suspect him of spying.
