Dinamite – Nuraxi Figus, Italia

Daniele Segre
1994 Italy 54 minutes Italian

Nuraxi Figus, Sardinia. Four hundred metres underground, the only light is that which comes from the lamps on their helmets, the threat of dynamite, a month with the CarboSulcis miners on strike : the ENI, the state owning organisation, wants to get rid of the only coal mine still exploited in Italy, and the men, like their fathers before them, are struggling to save their jobs. Yet this film enables them to give another dimension to what they say during the strike: ” We are miners who communicate; we want to say that we urgently need to boost our morale, to resume the steady march and to win respect… Our dignity is at stake, and we are certain of victory.”
