J’ai un frère

I Have a Brother
Emmanuel Vigier
2008 France 77 minutes French; Serbo-Croatian

Two brothers separated by the Bosnia-Herzegovina war, who had long remained out of touch, meet again fourteen years after their separation. Dražan, the elder, was twenty years old when he left Bosnia to receive medical treatment in Austria. A musician, he now lives in Marseilles. Dejan, two years younger, fled to Bosanski Brod after the war, a dying industrial town in the Serbian Republic of Bosnia, where he survives unemployed. Both of them remember their painful past, in which the determination of the one to escape, cut ties and burn all bridges echoes the will to forget of the other, who is now married to a young woman of Muslim origin that hides her real name (Fatima) under the more orthodox name of Maja.
