A 1997 speech by President Nursultan Nazarbayev traced out the future of Kazakhstan: a new capitalist world built on fantasies and illusions. Soviet principles are rejected. Everything is re-invented. Reality is transformed. And what emerges is a wealthy governing elite that fully appropriates for themselves a standardised and globalised collective imaginary.
