Les Derniers Marranes

Frédéric Brenner
1990 France 65 minutes Portuguese

In 1497, Portugal’s 200.000 strong Jewish population was forcibly converted to Catholicism. But despite the Inquisition, the majority remained faithful to Judaism. Christians called them Marranos (pigs). In 1990, in the Portugese village of Belmonte, some hundred people, officially Catholic, continue to secretly practise a five century old clandestine Judaism.
