A Thousand Fires

Saeed Taji Farouky

A Thousand Fires is a tale of family, fate, and life-cycles in Myanmar’s hand-drilled oil fields. A tough but loving couple works hard to put their wayward son through school and give him a better future. But the boy, raised on television and the internet and obsessed with the world of celebrity, has other ideas. He decides to quit school and pursue his dream of becoming a professional football player. His parents are alarmed and fear for his future, but when a fortune-teller teaches them how to come to terms with their karma, they slowly learn to accept both their son’s wishes, and their fate in the endless Buddhist cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
