Pedras da saudade

Philippe Costantini
1989 France; Portugal 75 minutes Portuguese

In 1977, Philippe Costantini’s film Terra de Abril told the story of Vilar de Perdizes, a Portugese village in the Tras-os-Montes. In 1988, the director returns to the same village to find that emigration has changed its character. The new constructions that have mushroomed testify to those who have made it in France and America, who return during the summer with a dream perhaps of returning to the homeland. The others have remained, in their stone houses. The aged spend solitary winters, the younger ones work the land… or build houses. After Terra de Abril and Les Cousins d’Amérique, L’Horloge du village completes the trilogy of Vilar de Perdizes.
