” In this film the bugle travels from Christianity to the Winti religion, from the austere funeral to the exuberant spirit festival, from the slow and ponderous instrumental choral to rhythmic possession. When a winti spirit evoked by word, melody, and begins to dance violently within her/his body, Fabre, whilst playing, leans forward and crowns the dancer with the horn of the instrument, blasting deafening deep notes. Wind, wind from the depths of the eart is what wintis, themselves made of wind, most like. Baas Mal, the old conductor says: “They adore the bugle. They never get tired of it”. The subject of the film is the journey from God to gods, from Christianity to polytheism, natural religions and the magic aspects of life. Coming and going across the world, through areas which stand apart and renew themselves in cultural fusion in an ever more widly spinning universe in which the human being rises up like a great, dignified, musical bird.” (Johan vander Keuken)
