The Truth Lies In Rostock

Mark Saunders
1993 United Kingdom 78 minutes German

An enquiry into the racist riots that took place in Rostock in August 1992 and which led to the attack on a hostel for Vietnamese refugees. The film uses numerous archive shots and interviews to retrace and understand the sequence of events and the indirect causes of this violence, in particular the disappointment and the economic slump which followed reunification, and the rise of neo-Nazism. It specifically analyzes the ambiguous attitude of the local authorities and the police, who were either unable or unwilling to intervene in good time and clamp down on the culprits.
