Repubblica nostra

Daniele Incalcaterra
1995 France 84 minutes Italian

Milan, Italy’s economic and media capital. From March to December 1994, the film follows various public figures involved in the city’s political and legal life: Antonio Di Petro and Piercamillo Davigo, magistrates in the Mani pulite pool, Alvaro Superchi, an Alfa Romeo worker and a MP for the ex-communist PDS party, and Gianni Pilo, the director of Diakron – a polling institute linked to Fininvest – and a MP for Forza Italia, which Silvio Berlusconi has just launched using all the weight of his mediatic power. The different voices which tell this story depict a period of Italy’s recent and eventful history: the wrestling match between the Mani pulite and the government, the general strikes against the pension reform, Judge Di Pietro’s resignation and the rifts in the governing coalition through to Berlusconi’s fall from power.
