Vision Man

William Long
1997 Sweden 50 minutes Inuit language

Utuniarsuak Avike is an old eskimo hunter from the district of Thule in the north of Greenland, who has spent much of his life walking on thin ice. Now 87, he is restricted to his prefabricated cabin and can no longer pursue polar bears or walrus the way he used to. But he now relives the excitement of the hunt in his imagination. Utuniarsuak is not a bitter man. He has a remarkable sense of humour and a very personal view of life and nature. Now he sees his own culture being steadily eroded and his language spoken by less than three hundred people.
