Film à  sketches. – Tentato suicidio, by Michelangelo Antonioni: people who have attempted suicide re-enact their stories. – Paradiso per quattro ore, by Dino Risi: the atmosphere in a popular dance-hall. – Una agenzia matrimoniale, by Federico Fellini: a lonely woman in a marriage agency. – Storia di Caterina, by Cesare Zavattini and Francesco Maselli: a single mother abandons her child. – Gli Italiani si voltano, by Alberto Lattuada: men looking at pretty girls on the streets. A psychological and sociological survey, put together and supervised by Zavattini, on the various aspects of love in a large city. Shot in a “direct cinema” style that heralds the cinéma-vérité, this film marks the apogee and end of authentic neorealism. A sixth episode, L’amore che si paga, by Carlo Lizzani (about prostitution) has been cut in the French version.
